Subway. No Way.

A group of Greenport Village residents is organizing to fight Subway’s effort to locate a sandwich shop at the former site of Christie’s Port of Pizza on Front Street.

Villager David Nyce announced the formation of the group that calls itself COGA FACS (Citizens of Greenport Against Franchises and Chain Stores) at Thursday night’s Village Board meeting.

Ms. Benton said allowing franchises to come into the village would threaten existing “mom and pop” stores that struggled through last year’s Front Street reconstruction and brutal winter.

“They’re the ones who have sweated it out” and deserve not to have to compete with national chains that have deep pockets and can undercut prices until they force out the small store owners, she said.

At the time of this post no one involved has suggested a study.
