Residents critical widening County Road 39

“If you widen the road, that increases speeding. It doesn’t necessarily make the road safer,” said Jane Nichols, who conducted a study in November of Southampton property owners along the highway.

Out of 142 property owners along CR39, 50 of whom responded, 44% said they were unaware of the plans to widen the road, and 86% said they are opposed to the taking of their property to widen the road.

According to the Southampton Town Police, there were about five fatalities on CR39 this year, including pedestrians walking along the road. And The Suffolk County Department of Public Works reports that the highway is considered the most dangerous in New York State.

The plan is a document that recommends further study, said Kabot, and safety is at the top of the list.

North Road, County Road 39 (NY 27)
LOCATION: Shinnecock to Southampton
STATUS: Two-lane road (signed)
NOTES: For about three-quarters of its length, CR 39 is multiplexed with NY 27. Future plans call for an expansion to five lanes, comprising four travel lanes with a center-turn lane, east of the Sunrise Highway terminus. This project would be overseen by the NYSDOT. (In the late 1970’s, there was a proposal to extend CR 39 to Scuttle Hole Road in Bridgehampton.)
