Greenport, The new Catskills

18 months ago, a new rabbi came to town, with ideas to expand the synagogue, Congregation Tifereth Israel, and transform Greenport into a new Catskills. The rabbi, Gary Moskowitz, wanted to attract Jewish singles groups looking for weekend getaways, play host to retreats for other congregations and lure busloads of Jewish tourists.

Rabbi Moskowitz and his supporters say they hope to open the new synagogue, the East Coast Jewish Center, by March, attracting unaffiliated Jews and converts. It will operate out of an old Masonic temple on Main Street and offer a theological fruit salad – “progressive traditional conservadox,” the rabbi says. So far, Rabbi Moskowitz said, he has signed up about 10 families.
