The Town of Riverhead will receive $200,000 in state funding through the New York Main Street Program for improvements to the Business Improvement District. The program is designed to support revitalization efforts that serve to improve downtown areas and enhance local business and cultural activities.
Of the three areas that will be renovated, said Supervisor Phil Cardinale, is the old Woolworth Building, which will be revitalized either as a multiplex, most likely, or used by the Culinary Arts Institute. The Ben Franklin site will keep the first floor as a commercial use, however, 30 to 40 new apartments will be constructed atop the store. Also, the NF Management Project will build a 6000-sq. ft. building along Peconic Avenue in the current barbershop area, south of the Vail-Leavitt Music Hall, which will house a microbrewery and many new shops. Cardinale said that it will be little shops, a la Port Jefferson and Westhampton Beach.
