Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy signed legislation last week authorizing the purchase of a 7.25-acre parcel of land in Shelter Island for open space preservation. But the deal almost didn’t happen—until a nonprofit group stepped in to help.
Originally, Suffolk County and the Town of Shelter Island were to both purchase 50 percent of Tedford Property, a 14.5-acre parcel. But when a legislative gridlock over the bill prevented the county from closing on its half by the deal’s deadline, Peconic Land Trust, a nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving LI farms and open space, stepped in. The group purchased the county’s portion, and now the county has purchased it from Peconic Land Trust.
