Osama Hampton

Russell Andrews’ (aka Peter Gethers ) new novel “Midas” begins in a busy East Hampton restaurant that is wiped out by a Middle Eastern suicide bomber.

The plot for “Midas” was partly inspired, Mr. Gethers says, by a question he asked of a U.S. senator about why there are no suicide bombers in the United States. The senator answered, he says, “We don’t know and we’re all terrified it’s going to happen.”

Another spark came when a friend reported, during the time Salman Rushdie was in hiding because of a fatwa – or death sentence – placed on him, that she spied the author on the next blanket at a Sagaponack beach.

“Two nights later, I was in a restaurant in Sag Harbor, and there he was,” says Gethers. The Hamptons, full of wealthy people, are “kind of protected. If Osama bin Laden knew someone in East Hampton, and shaved his beard, he could live there for years, going to private beaches and eating at Nick & Tony’s.”

On Saturday, Mr. Gethers will sign books at East Hampton’s BookHampton.
