Last Friday, the first day of Piping Plover season, the Tiana Beach Emergency Restoration Project was completed. About 25,000 cubic yards of sand was pumped onto the weakened beach and dunes. It is on top of the 10,000 cubic yards deposited in early February. The sand, which came from stockpiles at Shinnecock and Moriches Inlets, will easily protect the beach from high winds and seas throughout the summer, but hurricane season in the fall is another matter. Experts have said that up to 200,000 cubic yards of sand is needed to provide adequate beach and dune stability for storms of that magnitude.
